Zea & Xavier Charles

Zea is Arnold de Boer (also singer guitarist of The Ex) who writes songs in English and in Frisian, his first language. Together with improvising clarinettist these songs get an open structure, the obstinate playfulness of Charles lifts the songs up from the common singer-songwriter ground into an intuitive space of rhythm, sound, melody and poetry.

On retrouve Xavier Charles sur un 45 tours que publie Zea (Arnold de Boer) : Bourgeois Blues. Sous le blues promis par ce titre de Lead Belly dont Mark E. Smith retoucha les paroles, trouver des chansons en anglais qui oscillent entre pop et folk : Charles y intervient en effronté qui ornemente et assure de son soutien une guitare (folk ou électrique) obnubilée par les rythmes d’Afrique. Pour la seconde face, surtout.

The Ex’s Arnold de Boer (ZEA) hooks up with improvising clarinettist Xavier Charles for a fiery reworking of a leadbelly tune that sounds like an old Storm & Stress jam bewitched by a snake charmer. Meanwhile, the brace of De Boer originals that grace the flip absorb influences from both the Middle East (It’s Quiet) and Ethiopia (Insecurity Expert), with Charles weaving artfully between the guitar’s rhythms and reverberations, at one point mimicking the call of an entire rainforest.
